Complaints from citizens pile up - but Groebenzell is turning into a rook's paradise

Groebenzell will not take part in the concerted action of several communities to deter rooks.

The local council decided this with 17: 9 votes.

Gröbenzell - In the Gröbenbach community, the birds can settle, lay their eggs and raise their young.

No bird of prey will disturb them.

This affects a total of 13 breeding pairs: eleven in the trees on Gröbenbach on Ammerseestrasse, two on Rathausstrasse.

Mayor Martin Schäfer (UWG) admitted at the meeting: “There are two souls living in my chest.” Crows are protected animals, intelligent and very social.

A nest is also not a problem for anyone.

"But at 15 it looks different." Then crows could become a total burden.

Local residents' complaints piled up on his desk.

"You shouldn't underestimate it," warned the town hall chief.

Some citizens are in certain areas only with an umbrella.

Because: "It was all shit."

Single actions are pointless

In the working paper on the agenda item, it was concluded from Puchheim's unsuccessful scorn actions (see below) that "it is pointless if individual municipalities try to solve the problem on their own with very high financial, time and personnel expenditure". The mayors of Groebenzells, Puchheims, Eichenaus, Olchings, Gilchings and Germerings have therefore decided on a joint approach.

Inner-city colonies should not be killed as in the past, but forced to relocate to taboo areas outside. The campaign is to take place for several years and would cost Groebenzell alone 30,000 euros each year. Olching, for example, estimates this to be 35,000 euros in the budget. It is not guaranteed that the animals will actually settle elsewhere. But what the mayors are planning must be approved by the municipal council. And that was not the case in Groebenzell.

SPD council member Peter Falk emphasized: "It would make sense to take part." At the Puchheim cemetery there were "unsightly scenes" because of the crows. But the majority saw it differently. Ingo Priebsch (Greens), who lives close to the breeding pairs on Rathausstrasse, came out as a fan of the crows. His colleague Daniel Holmer wanted to spend the money on other things. He also fears that a scare-off action will make things even worse: "The animals are so smart."

However, the municipality will apply for an exception to the bans under species protection law and commission an expert opinion on how the scourging actions of the surrounding municipalities affect Gröbenzell.

Because if the crows should use Gröbenzell as an alternative quarter in the coming spring, the community could still take part in a resettlement campaign the following year.

Puchheim as a crow super spreader

The problem with the rooks is not new; it was over 100 years ago. Since the birds loved and ate germinating summer grain, there was a loss of yield. Therefore, the animals were pursued, and in numerous regions of Germany, shooting premiums were even paid. And with success: in 1950 only 600 breeding pairs were counted in Bavaria. The birds have been under protection since 1977, which in turn means that there are more and more.

A colony site was established in Puchheim as early as 2008.

However, the actions of the city to dismay resulted in the population increasing sevenfold within a ten kilometer radius of Puchheim.

The crows no longer only live in Puchheim, but also in Eichenau and Gilching.

In Gilching the population increased from 2017 to 2019 from 142 to 298 pairs and in Olching from 2019 to 2020 from 61 to 171 breeding pairs.

And in the Puchheim and Eichenau area, too, the number of pairs of crows decreased from 416 to 267 from 2017 to 2018 when the animals' eggs were removed.

But in 2019, 337 pairs were counted again.
