The swearing-in of the new Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala is likely to go down in history as one of the strangest: President Miloš Zeman is brought up for the ceremony in his own plexiglass box.

The politician has been infected with Covid-19 and therefore takes the oath of office from the liberal-conservative Fiala through an intercom.

The former university rector Fiala will rule the country with a center-right alliance of five parties.

The corona numbers in the Czech Republic are higher than ever, the hospitals are at their limit.

The vaccination rate is just under 60 percent.

Upon his appointment, Fiala promised to solve the country's "burning problems".
