The Gmund Mountain Rifle Company can look back on almost 400 years of history.

In order for it to be able to keep Bavarian customs and traditions from the region alive in the future, it is supported by a support foundation.

Gmund - The Gmund Company started in 1623. At that time the Thirty Years War raged, Swedish soldiers penetrated as far as the Tegernsee, but were repulsed three times by well-fortified men, the "Birgschütz'n". Fortunately times have changed. While the company used to have to defend its homeland with guns in hand, today it's about preserving Bavarian customs and traditions from the region good exchange ”, emphasizes the Gmund company captain Maximilian Gröbl (45) and names the Rettenberg rifle company Fritzens in Tyrol and the rifle company Sepp Kerschbaumer in Eppan (South Tyrol) as partners.

New members need impeccable repute and two guarantors from the company

Gröbl's enthusiasm for mountain riflemen is practically born in the cradle.

His grandfather was even the governor, and his outfit is now on display in the Jagerhaus, the Gmund local museum.

Even if times have changed: The values to which mountain riflemen are committed have been in place for centuries.

"Similar to the Swiss Guards in the Vatican, we see ourselves as protection for the Church and our homeland," says Gröbl.

A prospective mountain rifleman still needs a good repute and two guarantors from the company to become a member.

“We're not just a rifle club.” Not only that: “The Gmund Company is one of the few companies that has existed continuously and has never been dissolved,” says Gröbl.

Mountain riflemen's outfit has hardly changed for over 170 years

Almost 300 men and seven sutlers currently belong to the company, as well as a 40 to 50-man marching band who - if Corona does not throw a spanner in the works - musically accompanies the marching out for May devotions, Patronage Day, Corpus Christi or the Scapular Festival in Gmund .

The fact that traditions are respected is also underlined by the fact that the blue outfits with jackets and long felt trousers have hardly changed since 1848.

Maximilian Gröbl admits that the response from visitors when mountain riflemen move out makes him proud again and again.

The foundation will support the Gmund mountain rifles in the future

In order for this to remain that way in the future and to be maintained again after the Corona period, the company not only needs committed and loyal members, but also a financial cushion. The annual membership fee is 25 euros. “We can just cover the costs,” says Gröbl. That is why the Gebirgsschützen Gmund Foundation has now been set up. It is part of the trust foundation of the Kreissparkasse Miesbach-Tegernsee. As a member, the Gebirgsschützenstiftung receives a long-term all-round carefree package. "This means we have less administrative effort," says Gröbl happily and emphasizes that the foundation can be easily supported through donations or endowments. The chairman of the board of trustees is Robert Stumbaum, the former long-time Gmund captain and current Gau captain. The President of the Landtag, Ilse Aigner, as well as Duchess Anna in Bavaria and a dozen other people, some of whom are not members of the company, belong to the Board of Trustees.

The company would like to purchase a new standard - for the 400 year old in 2023

The company can use sums of money in any amount, after all, there are a few things to do.

For example the acquisition of a new standard.

The ensign walks with it on the move out, it is a visible sign of a long history.

It would be the third standard for Gmund.

A historic one from 1880, which was worn until 1973, is kept like a treasure.

In the same year, for the 350th anniversary, a new standard was inaugurated.

“It's pretty battered,” says the captain, “for reasons of cost we decided to buy a new standard.” Around 15,000 euros are probably needed for this.

It is to be inaugurated in 2023 - in the anniversary year.

Then the Gmunder mountain rifles not only celebrate their 400th anniversary, but also host the patronage day, the great honorary festival of all 47 companies in the Association of Bavarian Mountain Rifles.

Another day where customs are lived.
