The then US President Donald Trump announced the nuclear deal with Iran three years ago.

Tehran then began again with the expansion of its nuclear facilities, produced uranium that was almost weapons-grade and restricted international inspections - new sanctions followed from the west.

Now Iran and the West have met again for the first time in Vienna for new negotiations on the nuclear agreement.

Iran pushed for the sanctions to be lifted.

The Iranian delegation is "firmly determined", said Foreign Office spokesman Said Chatibsadeh to journalists in Tehran.

However, the USA, which is not sitting directly at the negotiating table, was skeptical.

Sharp criticism of the resumption of talks came from Israel.

Iran has demonstrated its willingness to compromise by sending a "qualified team" to Vienna, Chatibsadeh said.

"If the other side shows the same willingness, we are on the right track to an agreement." According to local media reports, the Iranian delegation, headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri, has been significantly expanded for the new negotiations.

Talks about a revival of the international nuclear agreement with Iran had last been interrupted for five months.

The 2015 agreement is intended to prevent Tehran from building nuclear weapons.

Among other things, the country undertook to limit its uranium enrichment capacities and to allow regular inspections of its nuclear facilities.

In return, international sanctions were lifted.

In 2018, the US unilaterally withdrew from the agreement and again imposed massive sanctions.

Thereafter, Tehran also gradually withdrew from the agreement.

Negotiations on a new version of the agreement started in Vienna in April.

These came to a standstill after hardliner Ebrahim Raisi was elected president in Iran in June.

New edition of the talks

The Vienna talks have now continued with the participation of China, Germany, France, Great Britain and Russia.

The USA only participates indirectly, even if President Joe Biden has signaled his readiness for a new version of the agreement.

The EU, which is chairing the talks, called for a seamless continuation of the previous talks.

All sides would have to work “quickly and constructively” on reviving the nuclear agreement.

Khatibsadeh called on the US to adhere to its obligations under the agreement.

"Such a murderous regime must not also be rewarded"

Israel, which has always opposed the nuclear deal with Iran, warned that Tehran would offer "almost nothing" in return for withdrawing sanctions.

"Such a murderous regime must not be rewarded," said Prime Minister Naftali Bennett.

"You will play for time, earn billions by lifting the sanctions, continue to deceive the world and advance your nuclear program in secret," warned Israel's Foreign Minister Yair Lapid at a meeting with his British counterpart Liz Truss in London.

"We are absolutely determined to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon," said Truss again.

Great Britain therefore hopes for successful talks in Vienna.

"But if they don't work, all options are on the table."

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran had significantly increased its stocks of highly enriched uranium in the past few months and at the same time restricted the IAEA's control options.

The director-general of the UN agency, Rafael Grossi, had talks about this in Iran last week, which he said, however, brought "no progress".
