Is the ski season on the brink? Lift operators on Brauneck want to make a decision at short notice

Is there skiing on Brauneck this winter?

Shortly before the beginning of winter, this question is still completely open this year.

Lenggries

- “Two weeks ago we were still full of optimism.

Now we really don't know what to do next, "said Peter Lorenz, head of the Brauneckbahn recently in a press conference of the Association of German Cable Cars (VDS) in Munich (we reported nationwide).

The operators of the tow lifts on Brauneck are also unable to make any statements at this point in time.

"I will probably make that decision in mid-December," says Josef Wohlmuth, operator of the Streidl lift.

As of now, he has no reliable information from the district office, which rules exactly apply to skiers this winter.

“That changes every hour.” But whether it's “2G” or “2G plus” - that is, lift tickets only for vaccinated and convalescent people who also submit a negative quick test: Wohlmuth sees difficult times for his company.

Are there enough rapid tests?

At the customers of ski schools, the corresponding evidence could still be checked without any problems, even when day tickets are sold you can have them shown at the cash register - but not every time you take the lift. Wohlmuth also refers to the many non-German-speaking guests who might find it difficult to explain the rules. And he fears that the required rapid tests will run out "because the market does not even produce this amount".

In general, he considers the current Corona regulations to be contradictory and not expedient.

“There is a gap between theory and practice.” You saw it last winter: During the lockdown, during which the lifts also had to stand still, he counted up to 2500 cars in the parking lot.

So there were still thousands of visitors.

"They just carried their skis up on foot, went Zipfelbob or rode on plastic bags."

2G plus "cannot be implemented"

Wohlmuth therefore assumes that there is no less activity at Brauneck, just because the lifts should be used to a maximum of 25 percent.

He suspects that the government only wants to save the aid payments that would be due in the event of a lockdown - while the lift operators are still being hit hard economically by 2G.

Josef Gerg from the Wegscheider Draxlhanglift cannot “say anything” about the winter season at the moment.

If the 2G-plus rule actually applies to a quarter with maximum utilization at the same time, he does not consider this to be feasible.

For the controls alone, “we would have to deploy so many people that the operating costs could no longer be covered”.

As hard as it sounds: Under these circumstances, no income is better than paying on it.

Because new reports about the corona measures are currently being received every day, one can "only decide very, very quickly" about a possible start of the season.

Gerg also has doubts about the meaningfulness of the rules.

"After all, we are in the great outdoors."

Snow cannons are already running

Gerg still wants to start making snow just in case. Brauneckbahn managing director Lorenz had also announced this: According to him, the snow cannons on Brauneck will be running in the coming days - but only under perfect conditions in order to keep costs as low as possible. They also don't want to prepare slopes as long as there is no real opening perspective, but only create snow depots. "We are well prepared, we risk it," said Lorenz.

Real season preparations or a statement as to when the first lifts will run are currently not possible, explained Lorenz.

It is open "whether there will be a ski operation under 2G plus".

And that although "our skiers scratch their hooves", says Lorenz.

The demand for season tickets is high, but they have been deliberately withheld.

In view of this demand, if there is enough snow, he expects a lot of visitors again this year.

"But we don't want uncontrolled chaos."

Technology is reaching its limits

But 2G plus is not the right way to prevent this.

The required restriction to 25 percent alone is not economically feasible.

In addition, there are too many unanswered questions, such as who can be promoted with whom.

Technical card systems such as Skidata or Access, which record lift tickets and vaccinations, are overwhelmed with additional test certificates.
