Japan announced the closure of its borders to all new foreign arrivals, on the background of concerns about Omicron, to join a growing list of countries seeking to immunize themselves from the new mutated Corona virus, which contains several copies.
"We will ban entry to foreigners from all over the world from November 30," Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters today, according to AFP.
Japan's borders were almost completely closed to new foreign visitors during most of the pandemic period, with foreign residents unable to enter the country at one point.
In early November, the government announced that it would allow some business travelers, foreign students and other visa holders to enter the country while continuing to prevent tourists from entering.
Japan had announced earlier that it would require travelers allowed to enter its territory from nine countries in South Africa to adhere to a quarantine in designated government facilities for a period of 10 days upon arrival.
