The traffic light turns serious.

To stop the fourth corona wave, the SPD, Greens and FDP are relying on a crisis team - and stricter rules.

Berlin - The corona situation in Germany is tense.

The designated new federal government therefore wants to set up a crisis team in the Chancellery.

It should start this week.

There are signs that the measures will be tightened.

Corona crisis team is coming: Major general heads the expert group

The traffic light coalition * made up of the SPD, Greens and FDP recently decided on a permanent federal-state exchange about the corona situation. It shouldn't just be about talks between politicians, such as at the classic Prime Minister's conferences. The designated Chancellor Olaf Scholz * (SPD) relies on a group of experts with virologists, epidemiologists or psychologists who are supposed to assess the situation and the effectiveness of the protective measures adopted on a daily basis. The Leopoldina Science Academy would also like to be involved in the crisis team. The President of the German Association of Cities, Markus Lewe, called for the municipalities to participate.

A general should be in charge of the crisis team.

The Ampel partners have already indicated this in the last few days.

A final personnel decision has not yet been made, but there are many indications for Major General Carsten Breuer.

The 56-year-old is the commander of the Bundeswehr Territorial Tasks Command, which is responsible for domestic operations by the armed forces.

The crisis team should start "at the beginning of this week", as SPD leader Saskia Esken said on Monday on Bavarian radio.

Corona situation tense: traffic light is discussing stricter rules

The crisis team should clarify how the corona virus *, which has recently become more rampant, can be contained. It is particularly about the extent of the restrictions. A new record for the seven-day incidence is currently being reported almost every day, and the situation in the intensive care units remains tense. FDP leader Christian Lindner therefore called for more decisive action. For example, better logistics for vaccination and a significant reduction in contacts are needed, he said on the ARD program "Berlin direkt". Lindner's words show that the traffic light parties are taking the situation seriously. The Free Democrats had recently issued a completely different tone to the Corona policy.

However, Lindner is still critical of curfews. The future finance minister argued that they would have a very high social price with no clearly proven benefit. Above all, due to pressure from the FDP, possible measures such as curfews or general business closings from the Infection Protection Act were deleted at the federal level. These measures are therefore no longer available to the federal states either. Esken now expressed his conviction that in view of the worsening situation, the FDP would again support more stringent measures. The Greens argued similarly, who, like the FDP, described Tuesday (November 30) as groundbreaking.

A decision by the Federal Constitutional Court on constitutional complaints against the federal corona emergency brake from the spring is then expected.

Lindner emphasized that one would evaluate very carefully what was compatible with the Basic Law.

A question that is probably not that easy to answer, especially since a lockdown is now being discussed again *.

Scholz had emphasized at the weekend with a view to the fight against corona that there was nothing that was not taken into account.

The SPD politician spoke of "new dramatic challenges".

From now on, he will be assisted by a Corona crisis team in overcoming these challenges.
