The Special Registration Committee of the "Doctor Registration Ordinance" held its first meeting today (29th). After the meeting, Chairman Tang Huiqiong said that the meeting reached a consensus on determining the non-locally recognized medical qualifications to be included in the list. The criteria include the level and popularity of the University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Medicine. Similar to the college, the course content is roughly the same, and different international rankings will also be consulted. It is considered that the teaching in English is ideal, but it is not necessary.

The committee aims to announce the list of the first batch of about 20 medically qualified institutions from March to April next year.

Selection criteria: similar to the medical school of Hong Kong University and CUHK

Many members attended this meeting, including Leung Cheuk Wai, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong, Chen Jialiang, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the Chinese University, and Liu Yunyi, Chairman of the Medical Committee.

Deng Huiqiong expects that the next meeting will be on January 18 next year, and the information provided by the Academic and Vocational Qualifications Evaluation Bureau will be reviewed. The goal is to draw up the first batch of lists from March to April. It is expected that there will be 10-20 colleges and universities.

At the meeting, members agreed to some criteria, including that accredited institutions should have the same level and international reputation as the medical schools of Hong Kong University and CUHK, and their courses would be roughly the same, and different international rankings would be referenced.

Deng Huiqiong added that the committee will also consider Mainland medical schools. It will not necessarily require all courses to be taught in English. Quality will be the priority, and there is no plan to send personnel to overseas on-site investigations for the time being.

She said that the committee tends to be cautious and focused on quality, so the list will be announced in batches. The list will not be permanent and will depend on the situation. For example, if there are major changes in the curriculum structure, it will be reviewed.

She believes that in the initial stage of the introduction of overseas doctors, there may not be too many overseas doctors to serve in Hong Kong, but she hopes that more overseas Hong Kong people will be attracted to serve in Hong Kong in the future.

Deng Huiqiong said that the meeting reached a consensus on determining the non-locally recognized medical qualifications to be included in the list.
