As winter is about to enter (December this year to February next year), a supplementary north monsoon meeting will arrive in the South China coastal area this morning (30th) to "welcome winter". The Observatory predicts the urban area this Thursday (December 2nd) The temperature dropped to 12 degrees Celsius and as low as 7 degrees in the North District.

The Observatory issued a winter quarterly forecast yesterday (29th). A short La Niña event may occur. According to statistics, the winter temperature in Hong Kong should have been relatively low. However, due to the impact of global warming and local urbanization, the winter temperature in Hong Kong is The obvious long-term upward trend offset part of the impact of La Niña.

Taking all factors into consideration, including forecasts from climate patterns around the world, it is expected that the temperature in Hong Kong will be higher than normal this winter, and the rainfall may be lower than normal.

However, there will be occasional cold weather, the number of days is similar to last winter, that is, about 14 days.

Global warming and local urbanization offset the impact of La Nina cooling

The Observatory pointed out that the water temperature in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific continued to drop in the past month or so. In October this year, the water temperature in this area was lower than normal. Based on the latest ocean observation data and forecasts from multiple climate models around the world, the central and eastern equatorial Pacific is expected It will remain cold in the winter of 2021/22 and may develop into a short-lived La Niña event.

Statistical analysis shows that when La Niña occurs in winter, the temperature in Hong Kong is generally lower than in the "ENSO neutral" state. However, affected by global warming and local urbanization, Hong Kong's winter temperature has a significant long-term upward trend, offsetting part of La Niña. Impact.

Based on various factors, including forecasts of climate patterns around the world, it is expected that the temperature in Hong Kong will be normal to high this winter.

It is expected that the number of days in cold weather is about 14 days

Although the average temperature in Hong Kong this winter is expected to be normal to high, the Observatory reminded that the weather and temperature can still vary greatly from day to day. Cold weather will appear occasionally. Cold weather in this winter (temperature at 12°C or Below) the number of days is similar to last winter (i.e. 14th).

In terms of rainfall, the Observatory does not expect La Niña to have a significant impact on Hong Kong’s winter rainfall. Most climate models predict that the rainfall in southern China this winter will be normal to low.
