The committee considered the option of pursuing a contempt complaint against Meadows after he failed to appear to answer their questions under oath earlier this month.

Meadows' attorney, George Terwilliger, explained at the time that his client was

"under Trump's instructions

to uphold the long-standing principles of executive privilege. It appears that the courts will have to resolve this conflict."

Terwilliger clarified his new stance Tuesday: "We are continuing to work with the select committee to see if we can come to an agreement that does not require Meadows to relinquish executive privilege or lose the long-standing position that senior advisers to the House Blanca cannot be compelled to testify before Congress. "

"We appreciate the openness of the select committee to receive voluntary responses on underprivileged issues," he added.

with Meadows."

Although the cooperation agreement avoided a legal confrontation for the time being, Thompson left the door open for civil or other action in his statement Tuesday.
