The Russian ambassador to Washington, Anatoly Antonov, asserted that the United States deliberately distorted the facts related to its demand for Russian diplomats to leave the country, pointing out that the matter was related to “the expulsion of these diplomats, not the expiry of their stay.”
"The US State Department is once again adopting cunning in its dealings with Russia, as the US side is trying to mislead the local and global community by deliberately distorting facts," RIA Novosti news agency quoted Antonov as saying.
Antonov explained that the US State Department had unilaterally set, last December, the period of stay for employees of the Russian embassy in Washington and the general consulates in New York and Houston to only three years, which means that these diplomats will be expelled when this period expires.
Antonov had indicated earlier that, at the request of the US State Department, 27 Russian diplomatic employees, whose period of stay was temporarily fixed, would have to leave the United States on January 30th, while the US State Department claimed that the departure of this group of Russian diplomats is linked to the expiration of the period allowed for their presence in the country. The country's territory is "not an parcel."
