Barbados abandons colonial ties with the British monarchy

Barbados has severed its last ties to the British monarchy after nearly 400 years.

In a ceremony on Monday, Prince Charles acknowledged the "atrocity of slavery" as the nation removed Queen Elizabeth II as head of state

and the first

president in its history took office.
