The farmers of Hama Governorate started the cultivation of barley in rainfed lands for the new agricultural season.
The Director of Agriculture, Dr. Sami Abu Dan, told SANA reporter that the plan for the barley crop this season includes planting 114 thousand hectares in rainfed lands and 9168 hectares in irrigated lands, indicating that the rains that fell this month contributed to accelerating the cultivation of this crop.
Abu Dan called on farmers to adopt the barley varieties that are being distributed by the General Organization for Seed Multiplication due to its great ability to adapt to the climates of the areas of stability in the governorate, in addition to its high production capacity.
A number of farmers pointed to the increase in the costs of production requirements of seeds, cultivation and fertilizers compared to last season, expecting that the increase in the price of barley in the local market will play an important role in encouraging farmers to plant the crop this season.
During the last season, about 140,000 hectares of barley were planted in rainfed and irrigated lands in Hama, most of which are concentrated in the eastern countryside of the governorate.
