China has expressed its willingness to continue working with the international community, including South African countries, to strengthen the fight against the novel coronavirus epidemic and its variants.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said today that his country supports the World Health Organization to continue playing a leading role in helping countries confront the epidemic and strengthening international cooperation to combat it, in reference to the discovery of new strains of the virus in the world, the latest of which is the new Omicron mutant.
With regard to the Winter Olympics hosted by Beijing and with the emergence of the new mutant of the Corona virus, Zhao confirmed that it will be held on schedule.
For his part, Cui Gang, an official with the Chinese National Health Commission, confirmed that more than 215 million Chinese aged 60 years and over received at least one dose of Covid-19 vaccines, noting that vaccination rates among people over 70 and 80 years old remained low in some cases. This requires that more efforts be made to speed up vaccination for those in these age groups.
