Covid-19: incidents in Guadeloupe after the departure of Sébastien Lecornu

The Minister of Overseas Territories spent 24 hours in Guadeloupe to try to calm the movement opposed to the compulsory vaccination of caregivers.

It didn't take long for the situation to deteriorate again.

Incidents occurred in Guadeloupe during this night from Monday to Tuesday, after the departure of the Minister of Overseas Territories, Sébastien Lecornu, towards Martinique where dams cut the island in two.

An attempted fire occurred in particular in front of the entrance to the town hall of Basse-Terre in Guadeloupe where unknown people set fire to the tires, police told AFP.

The mayor, André Atallah, had gone the day before to meet demonstrators at a roadblock.

In addition, a dam has resumed in Rivière-des-Pères, where it is regularly raised by the police and then reinstalled.

Another was erected near the regional council, police said.

Discussion interrupted

These incidents occurred after a 24-hour visit to Guadeloupe by Sébastien Lecornu which ended on Monday with a dialogue of the deaf with the inter-union.

The minister had judged that no discussion was possible as long as the unions "do not want to condemn assassination attempts against police officers and gendarmes", a "preliminary however obvious and indispensable".

His meeting with four union representatives from the UGTG and FO was therefore reduced to a simple handing over of "demand documents".

"It is not a failure, we are on the way to a return to order", had nevertheless affirmed Sébastien Lecornu, on the local channel Guadeloupe La 1re.

In Martinique, where the minister arrived this Monday evening, the night was calm, said the gendarmerie.

Dams were erected, however, especially on the highway, cutting the island in two.

According to the gendarmerie, two people were arrested for attempted burglaries.

Born from the refusal of the vaccination obligation for caregivers and firefighters, the movement has spread to political and social demands, in particular against the high cost of living, and has caused violence, looting and fires, as in Martinique.

The two islands are placed under curfew.
