In view of the worsening health situation in Europe and in particular in Belgium, the Board of Directors of the contemporary art fair has decided to postpone the edition until 2023.

The bad news fell on Monday and does not bode well for the future.

The Brussels Art Fair (Brafa) which was to take place in a little less than two months, from Sunday 23 to Sunday 30 January, at Tour et Taxis, in Brussels, has been canceled.

In view of the health situation which is deteriorating everywhere, and in particular in Belgium, its organizers have taken the lead. As they did last year, with the 2021 edition. In other words, two years of blank slate for this popular collectors' fair which has always served as a test value for the market at the start of the year.

“The desire to organize the event was very real and 134 exhibitors from 14 countries had responded to this 2022 edition. However, the health situation developing unfavorably, it is today impossible for us to organize a BRAFA like us. know it; friendly and welcoming. Both Belgian and foreign visitors would not have been able to attend the event in optimal conditions

”explained its President Harold t'Kint from Roodenbeke.

Of course, it is an extremely difficult decision, it is nevertheless preferable to postpone the fair to 2023 in order to find an edition perfectly in line with the enthusiasm of our visitors ”,

he added

.

Its priority being to support its exhibitors, the organization of the Brafa specified that it would do everything possible to imagine an alternative for 2022. It could be a Brafa in the galleries as the Biennale Paris had done in the capital. , but without much success.

Or an online Brafa, but this kind of online event got bored very quickly.

Information should be sent shortly regarding this alternative. The shortfall for the Brafa is significant. In 2020, they were some 68,000 visitors to hurry in the aisles. And the traditional gala dinner had some 1900 guests. A record attesting to the success of this generalist fair with a friendly atmosphere, the quality of which has only increased year after year.

After the Brafa, the next event to come is the Tefaf Maastricht, from March 12 to 20. Will it take place or not? This is the question everyone is asking. And the subject is hot. There are fees and you have to reimburse the exhibitors' deposits. In 2021, Tefaf had indeed taken place but at the end of May, not as usual at the end of winter. In 2020, its edition was exclusively online. But no one has forgotten that of 2019 which had to close urgently mid-term, after the revelation of a cluster that the organizing committee had not openly revealed. Merchants and collectors had fallen ill, some very seriously. There is reason to believe that no fair will take the risk of being held if the sanitary conditions do not allow it. And this, even if the financial loss is significant. We should know more about the arrangements made by Brafa and Tefaf in the coming weeks.
