The CEO of Moderna Pharmaceutical Company, Stefan Bancel, has suggested that vaccines against the Corona virus will not be as effective with the mutated Omicron strain of the virus as they are with the Delta strain.
"I think there will be a fundamental shortcoming, but I don't know how much, because we need to wait for the data, but all the scientists I spoke to concluded that the vaccine will not be as effective as it was with Delta," Bansel was quoted as saying in press statements.
Bancel added that "the large number of mutations in the coronary protein that the virus uses to infect human cells suggests that a modification to the current production of vaccines is necessary."
Resistance to vaccines could lead to more diseases, hospitalizations and a prolongation of the pandemic.
These statements raised new concern in financial markets about the course of the pandemic, at a time when other public health experts and politicians tried to express a more optimistic tone about the ability of current vaccines to provide protection against the Omicron mutant.
