Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev stressed that Western media discourse and US administration officials about Russia's aggressive plans are baseless and that these allegations are used as a justification for the escalation of tension in the east of the country.
Russia Today website quoted Patrushev as saying today that the Russian Federation has never shown aggression towards any country, in particular Ukraine, noting at the same time that the United States and its allies, by inflaming the situation, are creating a media atmosphere to strengthen their military presence along the Russian border.
Patrushev made it clear that his country does not conduct any unjustified transfers of Russian forces or unplanned exercises near the border with Ukraine, pointing out that what is happening by the Russian forces is monitoring the movements of NATO and Ukraine on the Russian borders.
The Russian Foreign Ministry had made it clear earlier today that Russia finds itself obliged to respond to NATO's movements near its borders in a proportionate, balanced and moderate manner, and that the steps taken by Moscow in response to NATO's activities are purely defensive.
