The Russian president has claimed he has not yet made a decision on his candidacy in the 2024 election • "My re-election is not a goal for Russia," Putin said.

During the 13th VTB Investment Forum held today (Tuesday), Putin admitted that he has not yet made a decision on running in the next Russian presidential election.

He noted that under the Constitution of the Russian Federation, he has the right to be re-elected, but added that his re-election is not a goal for Russia.

He further said that the very right to be elected to a new term in itself stabilizes the internal political situation in the country.

These things he said are a continuation of his last statement on the subject, which was on December 17, 2020. Putin said at the time at a large press conference that he had not yet made a decision on whether to go to the 2024 presidential election.

At the same time, he noted that for his part, he has official approval from the citizens to take this step.

That same month, the leader of the Liberal-Democratic Party (which opposes Putin), Vladimir Zhirinovsky, nominated potential candidates for the presidency of Russia, including Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, Foreign Intelligence Minister Sergei Narishkin, Federation Council Chairman Valentina Cheshvanov , Alexei Kudrin.

The next Russian presidential election will be held in March 2024. The Federation Council is expected to make a decision on the election about 100 days before the vote itself.

Putin has been head of state since 2000, with a truce between 2012 and 2008, in which Dmitry Medvedev served in the post.

Putin then ran and was re-elected president, which he is expected to hold, until 2024.

In the summer of 2020, Russia made amendments to the constitution that essentially reset the number of presidential terms to all former presidents.

Putin supported the initiative, provided the citizens of the country voted in favor of the amendment package.

According to the results of the referendum held on the subject, 77.9% of the voters were in favor of the amendment to the constitution and 21.2% opposed it.

The turnout was 67.97%.
