The net is furious about Leo Messi winning the Golden Ball | Israel today

Quite a few past players, commentators and fans are sure that Robert Lewandowski was "robbed", and that Cristiano Ronaldo had to win a higher ranking than sixth place • Former goalkeeper Iker Casillas: "I do not believe in this award"

After Leo Messi's seventh Golden Ball win in Paris, the star admitted that "in 2020 Robert Lewandowski came to win."

But quite a few players passed confident footballers who came to the German to win the prestigious title also in 2021.

By all estimates and early reports, even of betting agencies around the world, the leading candidate was a Paris Saint-Germain contact, but that just does not go through smoothly.

The reactions on the net and in the TV studios are furious, especially from the fans of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Manchester United star, who did not attend the event in Paris at all, was ranked only sixth (remaining out of the top five for the first time since 2010), and apart from Messi, he was ahead of Bandowski, Giorgini, Karim Benzema and Angulo Canta.

"This rating is ridiculous, Lewandowski has been robbed," read one of Manchester United's fan accounts on Twitter.

Former star Luther Mathews, who has previously won the prestigious title himself, said: "I feel I have no idea anymore. With all due respect to Messi - the title went to Lewandowski, who week after week proved how good he is in the Bayern Munich uniform. I can not understand why the title did not go to his".

"I do not believe in this award," said former goalkeeper Iker Casillas, "Messi is one of the five best players in history, but it is time they knew how to rate who is the outstanding player of a single season."
