A spokesperson for the Centre for Food Safety said that the Centre will follow up on a case of food poisoning that was reported by the Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health earlier on suspected to be caused by the consumption of mushrooms, and strengthened monitoring of porcini mushrooms sold in the market.

The centre sent staff to the retail shops selling porcini mushrooms in Luen Wo Hui Market in Fanling to investigate and take samples for testing.

After evaluating the samples, the fungus experts pointed out that samples of boletus were taken from retail stores "Jianhua Vegetarian" and "Jianxing Food Store" in the market, which were adulterated with some inedible mushroom varieties.

Initial investigations by the authorities revealed that the person in charge of "Jianhua Vegetarian" purchased the products themselves and brought them to Hong Kong, and then sold them in bulk.

In addition, the center has also followed up with the importers of the affected products sold in the "Junxing Food Store". Initial investigations revealed that the relevant products are only sold in bulk at the "Junxing Food Store".

The center has instructed two retail stores to stop selling and remove the affected products.
