"We did not wait for the establishment to adopt us": The Shaygetz band unites | Israel today

2021-12-01T07:36:23.835Z

A decade after the breakup the band reunites for a show on January 27, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of their debut album • Singer Yuval Mendelssohn looks at that album today completely differently

Shaygetz's last appearance as an active member is well remembered by Yuval Mendelssohn.

It was Independence Day 2011, and a certain moment in it made it clear to him and his band members that it was time to stop.

"I decided to play a game with the audience, that everyone would say their name and the name of an animal that starts with the first letter of its name," he says.

"It was nice for the first 20 minutes, but then I started going through the whole crowd and it did not go well. We sat in the van afterwards, there was a heavy silence and we knew, even without saying, that the band finished the horse. It was the way to tell friends, managers, and especially To myself, that I can no longer. "

Ten years have passed since then, and Mendelssohn has turned in other directions.

During the day he teaches citizenship, at night he plays with his band "Journey to Poland", and on the way he plays Menachem Begin in the children's series "Palmach" in yes and puts out great projects like "Yuval the bastard" (search for him on YouTube near your home).

Although Sheigetz has reunited several times, on January 27 it will do so again, at Hangar 11 in Tel Aviv.

This is to mark the 20th anniversary of "New York-Rafah", their debut album, whose theme song entered the pantheon of Israeli music - and also drew quite a bit of criticism.

"In real time this song did not catch on," says Mendelssohn, "our audience loved it and over time it made wings for it, but officially it was not on any playlist. It did not really bother us. We did not wait for the establishment to embrace us."

"This world stinks from New York to Rafah / Wherever you go, you will always find an enemy / These are homelands and I want to go down / With blacks or whites, we will all die racists," the lyrics say, and Mendelssohn says he still signs every word in the song this.

However, there are some songs on the album that are more difficult for him to deal with.

"My opinions have changed a bit," he says, "when you write songs at 19 you do it without a filter. I was then a kid with a big mouth and some desire to devour the city. The album had a song called 'Soldier of Mea Shearim', which was very pronounced against The ultra-Orthodox sector.

"I'm not so there anymore. I remember Shlomo Benizri was then Labor Minister, and he said very harsh things in condemnation of this song. I would get letters saying it was an abusive song. So I rejected it with contempt, today I can understand the other side."
