A Nigerian fire brigade spokesman announced that a boat carrying 49 passengers, most of them children, sank in the northeastern state of Kano, adding that 29 people died in the accident.
"We have recovered 29 bodies and rescued seven passengers. The search is continuing for the remaining 13 bodies," the spokesman was quoted as saying by AFP, noting that the boat was intended to transport 12 people, but "its captain carried it with so many children."
Accidents of boats sinking in Nigeria's waterways are frequent due to reasons such as overcrowding, bad weather and lack of maintenance.
Last month, seven girls, aged between 10 and 12, drowned in a boat wreck in the neighboring state of Jigwa.
