Main types:

The genus

Colutea

includes many species, including

C. arborescens

and

C. orientalis

, native to the Near East.

Colutea x media

, more floriferous and back in summer.

Uses:

In a flowering hedge among other species, or isolated and not pruned in a large garden.

What are the characteristics of the baguenaudier?

The baguenaudier is a fast-growing, highly branched shrub, up to 3.5 m tall.

Its deciduous, airy foliage gives a light shade.

Associated with plunging roots, this makes it possible to garnish perennials or annuals in bloom even under the branches.

The flowers of a beautiful deep yellow resemble those of beans or peas.

Very nectar-bearing, they are particularly appreciated by bees and bumblebees.

They give birth, once fertilized to large swollen pods with thin and translucent walls, the ringlets, which earned it its nickname of bladder tree.

Flowering period:

From June to early September.

Hardiness:

The baguenaudier is able to withstand polar temperatures down to -20 ° C.

It also supports heat waves and spray very well.

How to cultivate the baguenaudier?

Difficulty level:

Very easy.

Soil:

Particularly appreciates clay-limestone soils as long as they are not too wet in winter.

Exposure:

Maximum brightness.

Full sun if possible in the northern half of the hexagon.

Sowing / planting:

If the pods are left until the end of winter, spontaneous sowing allows young plants to be obtained.

You can also propagate by cuttings at the end of summer.

Planting is preferably carried out from November to March.

Cultivation management:

The baguenaudier requires neither watering nor fertilizer.

A severe pruning in February-March allows to maintain a compact habit and to obtain a more dense flowering.

Common diseases and parasites:

The baguenaudier has no enemies.

With the exception of the risk of fungal attacks, in the event of injury.
