The Russian Cultural Center in Damascus, in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, organized an event that included a symposium on the Syrian writers Sami Al-Dorbi and the Russian Dostoevsky, an exhibition of translated and untranslated Russian literature, in addition to the screening of a documentary film on Russian culture and its civilizational history.
The head of the Russian Cultural Center in Damascus, Nikolai Sukhov, explained in his speech that the symposium seeks to introduce the Russian civilization influenced by the civilizations of nations, with a spotlight on Dostoevsky on the occasion of the two-hundredth anniversary of his death, and Sami Al-Durbi on the centenary of his passing.
Sokhov indicated that the book fair contains 350 books, whether in the Russian language or translated from it, presented by the Russian Cultural Center in Damascus to enhance knowledge and access to well-known Russian literature throughout history.
Vladimir Ogarov, Deputy Director of the Russian Diaspora Library, indicated that this event is the fruit of cultural cooperation with the Syrian side and part of a major project carried out by Russia for the exchange of cultures with other peoples.
The advisor at the Russian Cultural Center, Ali Al-Ahmad, considered that today's event is a revival of cultural communication between Russia and the peoples of the East, especially by presenting the products of authentic Russian literature, which was translated and transmitted by very important Syrian writers, including the writer and translator Sami Al-Droubi.
Dr. Laila Sami Al-Droubi indicated that her father translated many books by Russian writers, including Dostoevsky, who was close to him in thought and writing, and Tolstoy as well, in addition to his interests in translating books of philosophy and psychology.
Dr. Thaer Zain Al-Din, Director General of the Syrian Book Organization, said that this event is considered one of the most important events due to the long-standing cultural exchange between the two countries and the topics that have been highlighted.
The Director of Damascus Culture Naima Suleiman pointed to the necessity of holding these events due to their role in developing relations between the two sides, while the head of the Cultural Center in Abu Rummaneh Rabab Ahmed expressed the center's readiness to launch an effective partnership with the Russian side within the framework of the process of acculturation and publicizing the civilizational achievements of both peoples.
