The left-wing candidate in the Honduran presidential election has defeated the ruling Conservative Party for the past 12 years, which admitted tonight (Wednesday) a loss. Siomara Castro, the wife of former President Manuel Zelaya, leads by about 20% over her rival, and she will replace the outgoing and controversial president Juan Orlando Herrands in office.
Castro, who has twice run for office since her husband was ousted in a 2009 coup, has vowed to "rescue Honduras from the abyss of drug and corruption dictatorship." The outgoing president has been tainted since his brother Antonio was jailed in the United States for drug trafficking, but he denied being involved.
Although the winner of the election has not yet been officially announced and the vote count continues, Castro's rival, Nasri Aspora, said he had visited her and her family. "Now I want to say in public that I congratulate her on her victory and as the elected president," he told a local channel. "I hope God will light the way for her and guide her so that a government will do what is best for all of us, the citizens of Honduras."

The former first lady faces many challenges.
The country, which has a population of about nine and a half million, suffers from organized crime, drug trafficking and large-scale immigration to the United States.
Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken sent her his congratulations, saying Washington expects to work with her.
