Macri: I did not spy or send to spy on anyone 1:01
(CNN Spanish) -
Argentine justice indicted former President Mauricio Macri on Wednesday for the alleged illegal espionage of relatives of the victims of the Ara San Juan submarine, which sank due to damage while at sea.
The tragedy occurred during his tenure, in November 2017.
The prosecution of Macri without preventive detention was ordered by Federal Judge Martín Bava for alleged crimes of abuse of authority and for the alleged performance of intelligence tasks prohibited by Argentine law.
According to the magistrate, these actions would have included monitoring and infiltration of groups of family members organized to protest and claim the government.
The former president and a reference for the opposition in Argentina denied the accusations and said that he will go to the highest criminal court in the country to insist on the dismissal of the judge in the case.
Macri believes that the accusation against him would be "politically motivated" and that there would be alleged irregularities in the investigation, a defense source explained to CNN.
The judge rejected the defense proposals.
In addition, after the prosecution, Bava prohibited the ex-president from leaving the country and seized his assets and money for the equivalent of one million dollars at the official exchange rate.
