Al-Hasakah-SANA
The farmers of Al-Hasakah governorate began cultivating their lands with legume crops in various areas of agricultural stability, in implementation of the agricultural sub-plan of more than 73 thousand hectares in order to secure the needs of the people of the governorate.
Farmers accept to maintain the cultivation of rain-fed legume crops, especially lentils, chickpeas and beans, as a result of lower production costs compared to strategic crops such as wheat and barley, and their short agricultural cycle, in addition to the presence of a local market for the disposal of products.
The head of the Plant Production Department in the Directorate of Agriculture, Eng. Jalal Bilal, said in a statement to SANA that the planned area for planting legume crops in the governorate for the current season exceeds 73 thousand hectares, of which about 67 thousand are for rain-fed cultivation and more than 6500 hectares are irrigated, including lentils, beans and chickpeas, noting that lentil cultivation It constitutes the largest proportion of them, as the area planted with lentils has so far reached 5350 hectares, and the process is continuing, while farmers will start cultivating chickpeas and beans during the coming period.
Bilal pointed out that legumes are among the crops that have been popular with farmers in recent years for many reasons, such as low production costs for rainfed areas and easy disposal of the produced quantities in the governorate's markets at remunerative prices for farmers.
The farmers of the governorate are hoping for an abundant season of legumes this year to compensate for some of their losses after the last season was damaged as a result of the drought, noting that the production of legume crops has improved greatly in recent years.
The farmers, Saeed Abdul-Qader from the countryside of Al-Malikiyah region and Ayman Al-Khaled from the Qamishli countryside, pointed out that the cultivation of leguminous crops is profitable, especially in the first and second agricultural stability areas, which are characterized by the highest rainfall in the governorate and are therefore cultivated with the highest levels of irrigation, fuel and fertilizer wages. And other wages. The costs are limited to securing the seeds, planting and harvesting them and some cleaning the fields from weeds during the spring season.
