Prime Minister Bennett and Defense Minister Bar-Lev have officially announced the police operation as the National Unit for the Fight Against Terrorism of the State of Israel

As first reported in "Israel Today": For the

first time in the history of the State of Israel, a security unit was recognized as the national unit for the war on terror of the State of Israel.

The police unit, which is subordinate to the Border Police and operates in close cooperation with the other security organizations - the IDF, the GSS and others - was recognized.

The IDF is a takeover unit for the rescue of hostages, for the fight against terrorism and serious crime in all areas throughout Israel. The unit is a pioneer, a leader and is a national knowledge center that combines special capabilities and means.

Along with the activities against terrorism, the IDF takes a very significant part in the activity against serious crime in Israel, and is an active partner in all major operations to eradicate crime, with an emphasis on crime in Arab society. , And many parallel units around the world maintain extensive professional relationships with the IMF.

The commissioner, Chief of Staff Yaakov Shabtai, has in recent years acted to recognize the Judea and Samaria as a national unit while still in his role as commander of the Border Police, and now as commissioner he has managed to bring national recognition with tonight's announcement by Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, Minister of Internal Security Amar Bar-Lev .

Selected actions of the HIMM

The unit was established in 1974 after the Maalot incident, in which 24 students were murdered.

The Horev Committee, set up following the incident, defined the responsibilities of the state arms and the division between the IDF and the police. The police were given responsibility for the internal security of the State of Israel and the task of establishing a special police unit was assigned to the Border Police.

Already in the first years, the unit acted operationally in the face of terrorist incidents in the country, including a terrorist attack in 1978 on the coastal road and in 1979 the arrest of prisoners who escaped from Ramla prison.

During the Galilee Peace War in June 1982 and later with the outbreak of the first intifada in 1987, the unit operated in countless activities in Israel and Lebanon, and as a result, awareness among decision-makers in the country increased the need for the YMCA.

In 1988, the IDF experienced a groundbreaking event that proved its capabilities at the international level - the mothers' bus: three Palestinian terrorists hijacked a bus that took the workers to the Dimona Nuclear Research Campus. In a takeover that took about 40 seconds, The IDF stormed the bus and killed the third terrorist. In the operation, three of the bus passengers were killed and the rest of the passengers were rescued. The event was crowned a success and is to this day one of the unit's significant turning points.

The 1990s were saturated with terrorist activities and terrorist attacks carried out by suicide bombers, and the unit took an active and central part in stopping many terrorists before they arrived in Israeli territory.

During these years, the unit began operating in the territories of Judea and Samaria and even suffered some painful casualties during the operational activities.

During the second intifada until Operation Defensive Shield and during it, the unit carried out hundreds of successful activities of arresting terrorists and thwarting terrorists in the heart of the country.

During this period, the unit intensified and grew, and cooperation with the IDF and the GSS expanded.

Since 2010 the unit has taken a significant part in tackling the extreme “selfie terrorism” that originated in global jihad.

The first significant attacks came from the direction of the Sinai Peninsula, including the attack on Road 12 in which six Israelis were killed.

The IDF fighters exchanged heavy fire with the terrorists and led to their elimination. An IDF soldier and a YMCA fighter were killed in the incident.

In 2014, the IDF fighters closed a circle with the kidnappers and killers of the three boys in an exchange of fire in Hebron.

In 2016, the IDF fighters eliminated the breadwinner who carried out the shooting attack on Dizengoff Street. In 2017, the IDF force eliminated a terrorist from Ramallah, after it opened fire on them.

Guns and a submachine gun were found at the scene.

In 2018, a YMCA force raided the Jenin refugee camp and surrounded the terrorist cell that carried out the shooting attack in which Rabbi Raziel Shevach was killed. In the ensuing battle, terrorists were killed and two YMCA fighters were wounded, one seriously and the other lightly.

A number of other terrorists were arrested and the houses in which they were fortified were destroyed.

As early as 2018, intelligence was received from the GSS that the terrorist who was at the head of the cell that murdered Raziel Shevach was hiding in a house in the village of Yamun.

In September 2020, it was announced that on August 15, an Arab-Israeli Bedouin resident of Segev Shalom, married to a Palestinian from Rafah, who had been recruited by Hamas, arrested him for spying, and under his direction he assembled an explosive device he planned to plant at the Bilu junction.

In addition, his brother was arrested who allegedly assisted him.

In June 2021, undercover forces from the IDF entered Jenin to arrest Palestinian terrorists who carried out shooting attacks on the IDF.

An exchange of fire ensued in which one of the terrorists was killed and the other wounded and arrested.

Palestinian security forces arrived at the scene and shot at the undercover operatives, who in response returned fire and killed two of them.

On September 11, 2021, YMCA, GSS and police arrested four of the terrorists (including Zakaria Zabeidi) who escaped from the Gilboa prison.

On September 19, IDF forces, the GSS and the IDF in Jenin arrested the two remaining terrorists. Should come out in the immediate term.
