There has always been a demand for "urban renewal" in Yauwang District.
As early as April 2010, the Yau Tsim Mong District Council had commissioned a consultant to conduct the "Yau Tsim Mong Urban Renewal Area Study" to explore the urban renewal development vision of Yau Tsim Mong District.
In 2017, the Urban Renewal Authority once again conducted a redevelopment planning study for the Yau Mong district to explore how to improve the current land use efficiency and redevelopment potential of the two districts, and plans to divide some areas into activation zones and open space, hoping to upgrade the area living environment.
The URA completed the report and submitted it to the Legislative Council in late September this year. The government subsequently stated that it was working on the implementation details of the "Youwang Study" and expected to complete the relevant work next year.
Why do we need to study and study?
Ye Yiming, a professor in the Department of Public Policy of the City University of Hong Kong, estimates that the URA will conduct a large-scale study to avoid large-scale reconstruction of the Yauwang District. The State Construction Bureau) gave the impression that they don’t want to demolish and rebuild everything like the Kwun Tong city centre. First, it will be very difficult to fully rebuild; second, it will be a “sky price”; third, they don’t even know. How should it be planned.” He said that in the past, the government also carried out some "minor repairs and supplements" to improve the living environment in the Yau prosperous district, such as building small parks and small-scale social welfare facilities, but this time the government hopes that the URA can make long-term progress. According to the plan, "Many buildings in this area are already old. Even if you don't want to rebuild, they will collapse one day."
It can be seen that the topic of redevelopment in Yau Mong District has been discussed for a long time. According to the regional research conducted by the Yau Tsim Mong District Council, residents mainly hope to improve their living environment and traffic problems.
However, the plan proposed by the URA's research seems to be contrary to the wishes of the residents, causing a lot of controversy outside...
Of course we most hope (to build public housing), but I estimate that from a cost perspective, the URA will not do this.
