There are suitable conditions in As-Suwayda Governorate to establish projects related to the cultivation of saffron, after the success of its cultivation through experiments conducted by the Agricultural Scientific Research Center over the past few years.
Dr. Wassim Mohsen, head of the Scientific Agricultural Research Center in Sweida and a member of the National Committee for the Propagation of Saffron Cultivation in Syria, told SANA Economic Center that the center’s experiments, which were launched to grow saffron in 2018, included three different environmental sites within the Dahr al-Jabal area at an altitude of 1500 meters and the land of the Hout research station at an altitude 1100 meters and at the site of the fifth tab at an altitude of 1600 meters, all of them gave good results, pointing to the importance of working to expand this promising agriculture in the governorate, which is one of the successful economic projects, especially after some people and those interested in planting their home gardens or areas of land they have.
Mohsen explained that the center is working to spread this cultivation and transfer the results achieved through the experiments it conducted to farmers, in addition to holding several scientific seminars on its cultivation, noting that saffron is a plant that tolerates temperatures as low as 10 degrees below zero and as high as 40 degrees Celsius and its cultivation succeeds in the regions Which is more than 600 meters high, and when it starts planting in September, it needs a small amount of water and depends on rain water during its growth stages. It also needs protection from rodents.
The saffron plant, or “red gold” as it is called, is considered one of the economic plants with high yields. It is one of the most expensive spices and has important medicinal and therapeutic properties, and its value can exceed precious metals such as gold.
The Ministry of Agriculture seeks to develop and spread the cultivation of saffron with economic returns on a large scale, after the success of its cultivation in the studied and tested sites in the governorates of Damascus, Latakia, Tartous, Homs and As-Suwayda.
