Two of our own: Ohad Knoller brings the original productions to the Givatayim Theater | Israel today

Ohad Knoller, director of the Givatayim Theater, thinks that the corona has changed the world of culture: "The audience is looking for a different experience if they are already out of the house" • The result: the theater puts on two original productions of its own

In July 2019, six months before the outbreak of the corona, actor Ohad Knoller was appointed director of the Givatayim Theater.

One of the things that came out of this crisis is the decision to produce original productions of the Givatayim Theater, which will run throughout the country.

This is a novelty, since in the last decade the Givatayim Theater, like many cultural venues around the country, is not a repertory theater that produces productions but hosts existing productions.

Initially, the theater is working on two productions: "Friendship Club" by Galia Cohen-Yunes and directed by Tal Wenig, which deals with the spouses of soldiers killed while on duty, and "Hinges", a unique theatrical event directed by Adi Gilat and starring Yael Sharoni and Einat Holland.

The "Friendship Club" will be staged on December 16 at Beit HaChayal in Tel Aviv, and will later reach the Givatayim Theater and run around the country.

"Hinges", which received the support of Mifal Hapayis, will go up in the offices of the high-tech company Trafficpoint in Tel Aviv in front of a small audience of 50 people at a time.

The audience will have to move following the actresses around the offices.

"The Givatayim Theater has existed for 25 years," says Knoller.

"When Yossi Alfi ran it when it was founded, it staged original productions, but over time the theater stopped producing original productions, mainly due to a lack of budgets. And soon we will get support for it from the Ministry of Culture.

"The idea to put on original plays came from the fact that in Corona many people sat at home and started dreaming dreams. The play 'Membership Club', for example, started as part of a reading festival at the Cameri Theater. The reading was successful and the creator did not want to wait any longer, so she came to us. From the fact that the Lottery has issued a call for works of art that take place in an unusual space. "

According to Knoller, "I'm aiming for a new, hybrid model of a cultural institution that is both a theater and a museum and also puts on musical performances. The Corona has changed the way people look at culture and art, and I want to act in all areas. That's how I see culture. "Here is a show, you will pass by the gallery and visit the exhibition, and then you will have coffee in our cafe. That is what the audience expects today. Special experiences. People returned from the corona with the expectation of something more special if they were already leaving the house."

Financially, you do not take a risk here?

"We are very calculated and manage to stay balanced. In Corona we lost, but we have an orderly and clear plan. We have been in a dynamic situation that is constantly changing, so I think we are prepared for change. We work very thin, I have a relatively small team and very talented and experienced."
