The Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health announced today (2nd) that 105 new cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) were reported in the third quarter of this year, a decrease of 20 cases compared with the same period last year.
In addition, 17 new cases of AIDS were reported in the third quarter.
85 males and 20 females were involved in the new HIV infection cases.
Of these, 49 were infected through same-sex or intersex contact, 25 were infected through heterosexual contact, and the route of transmission of the remaining 31 cases was temporarily uncertain due to insufficient information at the time of reporting.
The authorities urge the public to use condoms regularly and correctly.

The Centre for Health Protection stated that the three main sources of new cases reported were public hospitals, clinics and laboratories, with a total of 47 cases; the Department of Health’s Social Hygiene Clinics reported 16 cases, and AIDS service agencies had 15 cases.
In addition, 72 infected persons have been treated by the AIDS specialist service under the Department of Health or the Hospital Authority.
The Center for Protection said that since 1984, the number of reported cases of HIV infection has accumulated to 11,122. It also reminded that sexual contact is still the most important way of HIV transmission. The public should use condoms regularly and correctly to reduce the risk of HIV infection.

In the third quarter, 17 new cases of AIDS were reported, of which 10 were infected through homosexual or intersex contact, six were infected through heterosexual contact, and the transmission route of the remaining case was uncertain.
