Gang members broke into several prisons in central Mexico yesterday (Wednesday) with several vehicles, and managed to escape with nine inmates, in one of the most dramatic prison escapes the country has seen in recent years.
Authorities in the state of Hidalgo, north of the capital Mexico City, said in a statement that the attack, which began at dawn, injured two policemen.
Police in the country said soldiers, police and National Guard forces began searching for the escaped prisoners.
Police did not specify which gang was involved in the jail break-in.
The country's interior minister, Simon Vargas, said that "an armed group broke into the prison using several vehicles, and it should be noted that two vehicles were burned near the prison as part of a diversionary action by the criminal organization."
Local media reported that the burned cars found in the city of Tula after the burglary were infernal cars.

The use of infernal cars by gangs in Mexico is extremely rare.
In such an attack in the northern border town of Ciudad Juarez in 2010, three people were killed.
Gangs in Mexico, however, tend to set vehicles on fire to distract police, and ignited vehicles can explode when the flames reach their fuel tanks.
A large oil refinery is located in Tula, and the area is a target for gangs of thieves drilling illegal taps in state-owned pipelines to extract gasoline and diesel and sell them on the black market.
