The book (Candles That Did Not Melt) by Samer Awad chronicles 17 scientific, knowledge, literary and musical figures from the city of Lattakia in a documentary research attempt to shed light on the intellectual movement that the governorate witnessed in the past two centuries.
The book, which was presented to him by its author at a ceremony hosted by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese in Latakia, in the presence of a number of writers and interested persons, was issued by Dar Al-Irshad for Publishing.
The mentioned figures are Gabriel Saadeh, Elias, Edward Morcos, Mahmoud Al-Ajjan, Muhammad bin Abdul Hamid Al-Lataki, Masoud Boubou, Elias Saleh, Sheikh Abdul Fattah Al-Mahmoudi, Raoul Vitali, Muhammad Ali Shala, Abdul Latif Al-Sufi, Nasrallah Talei, Amin Saeed, Amin, Muhammad Rashad Ruwaiha, Abdullah Abd and Khalil Shayboub.
The writer seeks, as he shows, in a statement to SANA reporter, to shed light on unknown aspects of the lives of these figures by collecting information that included 348 references from 14 types of references such as interviews, manuscripts and field visits to focus on what is new in the conduct and work of these personalities.
Awad notes that the book is a step in a major project, with the presence of many flags in Lattakia who deserve to be lit.
The writer Manat Al-Khair, who presented the book, saw in it a true reference about these flags and a historical and knowledge museum for the city of Latakia through a number of her personalities. In later parts because this city still hoards a lot.
In turn, Sami Sufi, the nephew of Dr. Abdul Latif Al-Sufi, in a speech that represented the families of the personalities he addressed (Candles That Did Not Melt), considered that the book is an accurate scientific documentation and the best honor for these creators for their work and achievements that prove that thought does not die, pointing out that the book’s richness and the vastness of its materials, pictures and manuscripts required effort. Six years of research and investigation make it an important reference in the Arabic library.
It is noteworthy that the author Samer Awad is a lawyer and has eight books in literature, history, documentation and law, including (From My Papers on the Margin of the Crisis) and (The Orthodox Sermon Between Church and Law).
