Cyprus today rejected the Turkish regime's allegations that it encroached on Turkey's continental shelf, stressing that granting it licenses for exploration took place within the scope of its sovereign rights.
Reuters quoted the Cypriot government as saying in a statement that it will grant companies a license to explore for oil and gas in part of its exclusive economic zone, which is located in the south and southwest of the island.
In the same context, the Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed in a similar statement that “the Turkish regime deliberately fails to comply with international law by making baseless allegations and turning a blind eye to the position of the international community that fully supports the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus on its continental shelf.”
The Turkish regime ignored the warnings of the European Union and, in recent months, conducted illegal explorations for energy resources in the eastern Mediterranean.
