It is time for the students who took the DSE exam this year to start planning for further studies. As the population of Hong Kong ages, will everyone consider developing into the silver hair market and become the silver hair professionals of tomorrow?

The government expects that by 2036, one out of every three people in Hong Kong will be 65 years of age or older.

The new generation of elders’ higher requirements for the quality of life has greatly increased the demand for professionals who can provide related products and services for the silver-haired generation.

In response to social needs, the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Applied Gerontology at Tung Wah College covers elderly health management, organization operations, and Elder Technology.

Students can also conduct internships in elderly centers and homes of many non-profit social welfare organizations, including the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, to gain practical experience, so that students can grasp the trend of the silver hair market earlier and become professionals of tomorrow.

The employment rate for graduates of the course last year was as high as 100%¹.

This time, I asked Ms. Wen Junqi (Angela), Senior Manager (Service Development) of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, Dr. Liang Dimin (Daniel), Assistant Professor of School of Nursing, Tung Wah College, and Yan Xuyi (Gloria), a fourth-year student who took the course, from different perspectives. Share with you the characteristics of the course.

Elderly service needs, multi-course content keeps pace with the times

In addition to providing valuable internship opportunities for students in software, Tung Wah College also has advanced and complete teaching equipment in hardware, allowing students to grasp the latest knowledge and trends in the industry.

External impressions of gerontology courses and the silver hair market are generally related to nursing care. However, Angela pointed out: "The new generation of elders have higher levels of knowledge and income, which makes them more demanding in their later life and requires better planning. By Clothing, food, housing, transportation, health management, leisure activities and lifelong learning courses require more and better services and supporting facilities. Therefore, for young people, this is a large space for them to develop their expertise and use their vitality and new ideas to go. Complementing the old practices and providing innovative services and products for the silver hair market.” Daniel added that the content of the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Applied Gerontology at Donghua College will be regularly updated, adding the latest professional knowledge and curriculum design.

He said: "The courses closely follow social needs and policies, and include health management, social enterprise management, event design and evaluation, physical and mental care, social welfare policies, and even Elder Technology design. For example, the government’s increased funding in recent years is due to the difficulty of swallowing. Elders provide soft meals, and we will also let students learn about relevant policy developments so that they can master and apply the latest knowledge.”

For young people who are interested in entering the silver hair market, Ms. Wen Junqi, Senior Manager (Service Development) of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, said that in addition to professional knowledge, it also requires the enthusiasm of helping people to provide and design for the elderly. The most appropriate service.

The college introduces the latest teaching facilities to help young students feel the situation of the elderly.

Students can try on the "Simulation Suit for the Elderly" in the picture to experience the state of physical degradation, such as visual impairment and mobility difficulties.

Students can better understand the needs of the elderly when they work in the future.

The course will also teach students to use the latest senior technology to take care of the elderly in need. It seems that the therapeutic mechanical seal in the picture was developed by Japan. It is equipped with 5 kinds of sensors including touch, light, hearing, temperature and posture sensors, and even learning The seal will respond differently to the user’s voice and touch.

Many medical institutions and elderly centers have used mechanical seals to assist patients with dementia.

Tung Wah Group of Hospitals provides internship opportunities for students to gain profound and valuable experience

Daniel pointed out that the course focuses on students' application and practice. Students need to complete at least 240 hours of clinical internship to accumulate practical experience and enhance employability.

As one of the industry partners of the college, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals arranges students to practice internships at its social welfare institutions every year.

Angela said: "The students of Tung Wah College I have contacted all have a strong professional foundation. During the internship, they can not only practice the knowledge in the classroom, but also take the initiative to understand the details of the work. They are also good at driving the atmosphere and often make the elders in the center. Laughing. The professional performance of the classmates gave colleagues confidence that they can immediately devote themselves to our work after graduation."

Gloria, a fourth-year student who is currently studying the Bachelor of Applied Gerontology, has just completed the first phase of internship at the Luo Wang Yuwen Nursing Home and Day Center of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals.

She has taken a nursing course, said: “Compared to the nursing course, there is only nursing work. The internship of the applied gerontology course will not only have the opportunity to communicate with the elderly, but will also visit different social welfare institutions. Just two months of internship will be enough. I have been to 9 institutions, such as visiting the Housing Association and learning about designing elderly homes, and learning about services at the front-line safety bell. The course content is more "fun" than expected. During the internship period, the elderly homes cannot be visited due to the epidemic, so we use The knowledge of communicating with the elders in the classroom has become the spiritual comfort of the elders, and it also made me feel that the work of elder services is really meaningful.” Gloria said that the content of the gerontology course is very exciting, and it is definitely not the "elderly" subject in everyone’s mind. Daniel also added that after the internship, students can better realize that their work is quite meaningful and can serve people in need in the society. The employment rate of course graduates is also satisfactory, and it is precisely because they find it in a diversified curriculum. My own development direction has inspired the potential among them, and many students will continue to study other professional courses.

Gloria (left) said that during the internship, from nursing to communicating with the elders, she can apply the knowledge she has in class, and also made her determine her goals. After graduation, she will enter the silver hair market.

Gloria carried out internships during the epidemic. She said that she can accompany the elderly daily and relieve them of boredom quite satisfying.
