In the two previous referendums, the “no” had won: at 56.7% in 2018 and at 53.3% in 2020. Under the Nouméa agreements signed in 1998, the next election should be the epilogue of 'a long process of self-determination. Except that the separatists, who had yet demanded it last spring, decided to boycott it, for lack of being able to postpone it. In order to justify this refusal to jump,they invoke the health situation (the Covid landed on the archipelago a few weeks ago) and the government's failure to respect “Kanak mourning”, which the “customary senate” sets at one year! This does not bode well.
