Tartous-Sana
On the occasion of the International Day of Disability, the Special Olympics Foundation in Tartous, in cooperation with the branch of the Sports Federation and the Disability Sub-Council in the governorate, organized a sports marathon on the Sea Corniche for children with disabilities and a number of healthy children.
The marathon ran from the Festival Square to the Medical Point Center on the Corniche, with a distance of 400 metres.
The supervisor of the initiatives of the Special Olympics in Tartous, Raghda Hussein, told SANA reporter: The event comes to introduce and express the rights of people with disabilities through the practice of various community activities, including sports, based on the importance of social integration for them and raising awareness of the rights of this segment, which no one can deny its existence and capabilities despite the difference in the type and form of disability. She pointed out that the participation of champions with disabilities who won medals in local and foreign championships gave the marathon a strong competitive character.
In turn, the Secretary-General of the Sub-Council of Disability in Tartous, Madin Tofaha, stated that the marathon is an affirmation of the state of societal integration of people with disabilities with their ordinary peers in various different social activities that are appropriate to their situation if the appropriate conditions are provided for them.
A number of the participating children’s families expressed the importance of these activities that work to create balance among them and discover each other’s capabilities while taking advantage of the state of convergence that breaks the barrier of fear and brings together children, adolescents and youth.
