On the occasion of the International Day of Disability and under the slogan “With enthusiasm we reach the summit”, the Syrian Special Olympics Foundation launched today the fifth local championship with the participation of athletes from various Syrian governorates.
The first day of the championship included a cycling race in Idlib governorate, where the athletes set off from the northern entrance to the city of Khan Sheikhoun on the international highway to Hama, where the first winners were honored at the arrival point.
In Hama, too, the Olympics Foundation held a marathon for people with special needs, with the participation of more than 500 players, who set out from in front of the party branch building to reach the governorate building in Al-Assi Square.
In a statement to SANA reporter, Talal Martini, the official in charge of sports activities in the Syrian Special Olympics, explained that the establishment of the fifth local championship coincides with the International Day of Disability, which falls on the third of December of each year, and aims to integrate this important group into society and increase its interaction through the participation of athletes from different countries. Governorates, indicating that sports activities will be held every Friday for two months, as a volleyball and handball tournament will be held in Hama next Friday.
For his part, the head of the Executive Committee of the Hama Sports Federation branch, Abdul Razzaq Zaitoun, indicated that the committee will provide all its capabilities for the success of the fifth local championship competitions, whether through the number of participants or the gyms that will be ready to host activities with the aim of making this event a success because it highlights an important group in society. He indicated that the General Sports Federation recently signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Syrian Special Olympics with the aim of uniting efforts to support the disabled in Syria with various sports activities.
