The South African Minister of Health, Jo Falla, announced that there are indications that the new mutant of the Corona virus (Omicron) is spreading rapidly and has a high prevalence rate.
Fala said in a statement to the American channel (CNN) that "the new recorded cases rose by 300 percent in the last seven days, and the rate of positive cases increased from 1 to 2 percent two weeks ago, to record 22 percent now."
He pointed out that there are indications that this mutant is rapidly spreading, and injuries have been recorded among the vaccinated, but the nature of the injuries among the vaccinated was moderate.
He pointed out that the majority of those admitted to hospitals are unvaccinated and young people under the age of 40.
The head of the Public Health Surveillance and Response Sector at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases in South Africa, Michele Gromy, said that the Omicron mutant has spread among the older age group as well, adding that many of the group of infections were initially detected among young people, and we are currently witnessing its spread among the older age groups with the development of this wave.
