- If there isn't a Christmas market, then at least a “Tölzer Nativity Path”: That was the motto last year.

Hardly anyone could imagine twelve months ago that the pre-Christmas period in 2021 would be similar to the one in 2020.

The nativity scene in the old town and the bathing area should bring the Christmas spirit to the town as much as possible in December.

"Over the past year we have seen families over and over again who have gone to the individual stations with flyers in hand and are happy to see so many different cribs," says Wolfgang Friedl, chairman of the Tölzer Krippenverein.

Good response

Last year he had checked out the numerous shops and advertised the project, this autumn the new city manager Franziska Gschwandtner took care of it. It also met with a great response. "The feedback was very good," reports Gschwandtner. Above all, the owner-operated shops agreed to the agreement, including new shops. It is not so easy with some of the larger branch stores, where the Christmas decorations are usually given in the shop window.

The parties involved are by no means just retailers. For example, you can see the Tölz annual nativity scene as well as those in the Franciscan and parish churches, in the “Holy Families”, on the Kalvarienberg and in the Mühlfeldkirche. There is also a crib pavilion and hut on Marktstrasse. And the Tölzer City Museum is also represented in the project with its numerous nativity scenes. 50 shops between Mühlfeldkirche and Amortplatz are taking part in the campaign. Where a crib is located is indicated by a large, bright yellow star with a tail, which usually hangs directly on the window in which the crib is located. A good half of the business people exhibit family-owned cribs, reports Gschwandtner, all the others got cribs on loan from the association. All are illuminated until the evening hours.

The variety of cribs is great.

You can see traditional representations in the alpine style, but also scenes in front of an oriental backdrop.

If you stroll through the city, you will also discover some special features.

For example, in the shop window of Lederwaren Kirner, there is a bamboo nativity scene from Africa.

It consists of ingeniously carved reeds.

If you look closely, you can see how, for example, the Three Kings peel out directly.

His father ordered this crib from a wicker manufacturer 50 or 60 years ago, reports managing director Toni Kirner.

"We would also like to know more about the origin, but that is difficult."

Crocheted figures and a crib made of paper

In Anastasia Posch's handicraft shop in Mühlgasse you can marvel at a self-crocheted nativity scene. It's hard to believe, but: “It took me three weeks to do this,” says Posch with a smile. You can see the holy family, shepherds, sheep, ox and donkey, a big angel and the three kings. Posch embroidered and decorated them extensively, for example with pearls. So that they are stable, they are filled with sheep's wool or wadding. “I had a template, but a lot also came from my imagination,” says Posch. She is happy that some customers have already photographed the crib and want to crochet something similar themselves. "Maybe I'll do something too, a little sheep or a dog."

At Zauner Stationery, on the other hand, you can see a nativity scene in the oriental style made of paper.

It is a loan from the club.

"The copy is around 100 years old," says Friedl.

Back then it was not uncommon to cut out the figures and glue them to cardboard.

"Because large nativity scenes with carved wood figures were previously reserved for wealthy families," explains the association's board of directors.

Figures made from bread dough

The example in the Schwaighofer gentian distillery is also unusual.

Managing director Claus Janßen shows small nativity figurines from Ecuador - they were made from bread dough and brightly painted.

His brother Paul, now a priest, bought the crib during a study visit to South America, reports Janßen.

The colorful clothes and the joie de vivre that the figures exude are striking.

“The idea of a crib path in the city is good,” says Janßen.

He, too, observes how locals and guests stop in front of the shop windows and are happy.
