The case will be sentenced on January 8 next year.
Few public events after major changes in the law
The defense pleaded that the court did not necessarily have to continuously increase penalties. It also pointed out that there were major changes in the law in the middle of last year, and that there were few public activities, illegal assembly and riots had disappeared, and the deterrence of the public was sufficient, and the court did not need to pass this case again. The sentence further deterred the public.
Each defendant has good character in the past
The defense also pointed out that none of the defendants in this case are bad guys. I hope that the court will consider that the case has a special background and many defendants have good characters in the past.
Judge Chen Zhongheng stated that he understood that the defendants were not involved in triad fights.
The incident stemmed from the violence of 721 being condoned
Before the trial, the 17th defendant Jian Jianhuang, who had pleaded guilty, made his statement in person and mentioned that the 728 riot was caused by the police's attack on the 721 White Man, who condoned violence. He also quoted the American civil rights leader Martin Luther King as saying: "The riot is The language of the unheard.”
The rioters wanted to participate in social decision-making
Jane also pointed out that although the demonstrators had believed in the power of peace, the government still ignored the decision to withdraw the amendment, which caused a series of incidents.
Jane also responded that a judge mentioned that he did not know what the demonstrators were fighting for and what they were demonstrating, and that the rioters wanted to participate in social decision-making, distribution, and the right to speak. However, there is no way to fight for the right to speak through peaceful means, and the system has become oppressive. As former President Mao Zedong said: "Where there is oppression, there is resistance."
He also mentioned that the current state of public opinion authorization is deteriorating, questioning whether the citizens are still obligated to abide by the social contract that they have never agreed to. He then quoted in the movie "Wu Zhuang Yuan Su Qi Er", the protagonist once said to the emperor: "How many beggars are there? It’s up to me to decide your son. If everyone has enough food and clothing, they want to be a beggar.”
Reckless behavior but not ashamed of it

The 20 convicted defendants are: Zhang Zhilin (21 years old, unemployed), Chen Zikang (28 years old, student), Zhong Hongyang (20 years old, student), Xu Qingjun (20 years old, barber), Chen Xijun (24 years old), Cui Yaoming (21 years old) , Student), Lin Shaofeng (24 years old, salesperson), Cai Zexin (40 years old, technician), Yang Zhisheng (20 years old, student), Lin Shengru (19 years old, clerk), Huang Songen (22 years old, student), Huang Jinshan (20 years old, clerk) ), Li Shaokang (21 years old, student), Zhou Jintao (18 years old, unemployed), Mo Zhuohui (33 years old, clerk), Huang Feihong (19 years old, unemployed), Tan Shimiao (23 years old, clerk), Tan Yiting (25 Years old, clerk), Lu Yinghui (27 years old), Huang Baixian (21 years old, student).
All defendants were convicted of participating in the riot on July 28, 2019 between West Side Street and Queen Street near Des Voeux Road West.
The defendant Jian Jianhuang (24 years old) pleaded guilty before the trial, while the remaining defendants were convicted after trial.
