The emergency services were notified early in the morning by the victim's companion and discovered the body in a squat located in the old disused barracks in the Chanzy district, where the couple lived.
An investigation was opened and entrusted to the judicial police of Reims.
"A representative of the prosecution went there, and the companion of the homeless is currently in custody," said the prosecutor of the Republic of Châlons-en-Champagne, Ombeline Mahuzier on Saturday.
An autopsy is due to take place on Sunday.
The couple had reported being the victim of an assault in late October, the prosecution said.
