Pablo, the oldest Andean bear that was in the Quito Zoo, and whose species is protected because it is in danger of extinction, died at the age of 27, the institution reported this Friday on its social networks.
The animal died of old age and during its stay in the park it served to study the species that is emblematic in Ecuador.

"Pablo's contribution to the conservation of his species has made him a milestone in the actions to protect Andean bears," said the Quito Zoo on Twitter.

Pablo arrived at the zoo in 1998 and, according to information provided by the zoo, his DNA was used to implement detection strategies for wild bears.
The Andean or spectacled bear belongs to the tropical Andes and is found in South America.
