Fresh snow… and unstable.
Météo France places the Pyrénées-Atlantiques (64) and the Hautes-Pyrénées (65) in orange avalanche vigilance this Saturday, December 4, the first day of the season for many ski resorts.
Thus if "the snow cover is important in the west of the Pyrenees, including at low altitude", recognizes the meteorological monitoring body in its latest bulletin, the snowpack is "still not very consolidated", and the wind regularly weakens the different layers of snow.

“Very large avalanches could occur, sweeping away the snowpack over its entire thickness.
They could threaten mountain infrastructures and sometimes medium altitude roads ”, Météo France alert.
The situation should also worsen from Sunday morning "on the massifs of the Basque Country, Aspe-Ossau and Haute Bigorre affected by this orange vigilance".
Currently classified level 4 by the organization, these territories should move to level 5 on Sunday morning.
The high avalanche risk is expected to persist until Monday morning.
