Turkish media reported tonight (Saturday night) that a plan to assassinate Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was thwarted during a rally in his northern city of Sirte.
According to the report, an explosive device was attached to a police jeep at the edge of the rally, near the track where the president was supposed to pass.
Police officers who were at the scene noticed the charge and detonated it and the vehicle which was attached.
The rally in support of Erdogan was planned after tens of thousands of people demonstrated in the northern city in protest of Erdogan's economic policies, which caused severe inflation and eroded the purchasing power of Turkish citizens.
It is possible that the report of the assassination is an attempt by the president's associates to seek public support for him, similar to the one that arose after the military coup against his rule in 2015.
