What started as an attempt to get rid of pesky snakes ended with an entire house on fire.

A 3,000-square-foot home in Dickerson, Maryland, an hour west of Baltimore, was engulfed in flames on Nov. 23 when the owner tried to fight off an invasion of snakes on the property, lead spokesman Pete Piringer told CNN. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service.

Piringer said snakes had been a constant problem for this landlord and the previous tenant as well.

The owner of the house used pieces of charcoal to generate smoke and cause the reptiles to flee, but some pieces were placed in close proximity to combustible materials, eventually causing the house to catch fire.

A Maryland home caught fire after a family used charcoal to eradicate a snake infestation.

The fire started in the basement and quickly spread to every floor, engulfing the multi-story home in fire, according to CNN affiliate WJLA.

Piringer told CNN that the owner was home a few hours before the fire, but fortunately no one was there when it started.

A passing neighbor saw the smoke and called 911.

Around 10:00 pm, 75 firefighters showed up to fight the blaze.

"There were no fire hydrants in the area," Piringer said.

"Which is not a problem because we are used to it, but we had to move in tanker trucks."

It took firefighters a few hours to get the fire under control, but it didn't go out completely until the next morning.

Repairing the damage will cost more than $ 1 million, Piringer said.

The home was recently purchased for $ 1.8 million, according to public records.

The fire department considered the incident an accident as there was no evidence or intention to start the fire.

Piringer recommends using other ways to combat an invasion.

"There are animal services that can come out and make recommendations, or pest control, or an exterminator," Piringer said.

"We recommend that you have professionals dealing with any pest control issues to help maintain the situation."

Since no one was home at the time, no injuries were reported.

The status of the snakes is unknown, but since the house was left in rubble, it is assumed that they no longer live there.
