Between re-manufacturing what was known in the past as “rags” in a modern way and recycling unusable fabrics to benefit from them again, the wheel of a small workshop project provides job opportunities for a number of women in Sweida.

The project depends on its operation on a set of tools, including the old hook, the traditional loom, the nail loom and the spindle, and five women are currently working in it, according to the owner of its idea, Kholoud Henedy, who explained during her interview with SANA reporter that based on the fact that the industry of what is known as “the rags of rags” present in the memory has become almost extinct and needs to be restored. Reviving it as part of the local heritage, especially with the return of the need for it to furnish the homes of some families, including those who came to the governorate during war conditions, after the high prices of carpets and rugs and the inability of many to acquire them.

Heneidy added that the project bears important environmental aspects by reinvesting unusable fabrics instead of throwing them, and the work has been developed by manufacturing many pieces of fabrics that are used for decoration in salons and hostels.

The project official, Hanan Radwan, works on the traditional loom, whose idea was ingrained in her memory, noting the importance of the project in helping the women working in it to achieve a supplementary income to secure part of their needs in these difficult economic conditions.

The women working in the project market their production in exhibitions, bazaars, economic events and social media, with their ambition to expand and spread the culture of recycling fabrics and train those wishing to work in this field. She was displaced from Homs 10 years ago in the circumstances of the war. The project brought her psychological comfort, as he introduced her to the local heritage of As-Suwayda Governorate.

What the women working in the project offer reflects the capabilities and creativity of Syrian women and their ability to work, produce and challenge the most difficult circumstances.
