The death toll from the eruption of the Semeru volcano in Indonesia has risen to 13, as rescuers continue to search for the missing.

AFP quoted a spokesman for the Disaster Management Agency, Abdul-Mahari, as saying that the death toll is now 13. Rescuers have found more bodies, pointing to the rescue of ten people who were trapped yesterday due to the eruption of the volcano.

Yesterday, a toll reported that one person was killed and 41 others injured as a result of the eruption of the volcano.

In the village of Kura Kyobokan, lava destroyed the homes of more than 300 families, and in this village in Lumagang district, a dead body was found, while 41 people, including two pregnant women, suffered severe burns, according to the deputy governor of Lumagang.

The source pointed out that Lumagang became isolated due to the lava that destroyed a bridge.

A video posted by the authorities showed residents in a large number of villages, including children, running for shelter when the volcano erupted.

The local authorities also erected a 5-km-long security wall around the crater.

The last eruption of the Semeru volcano dates back to December 2020, when thousands of people fled, while entire villages were covered with ash.

Indonesia lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where the confluence of continental plates causes significant seismic activity.

There are approximately 130 active volcanoes in this archipelago in Southeast Asia.

At the end of 2018, the eruption of a volcano between the islands of Java and Sumatra caused an underwater landslide and a tsunami that killed nearly 400 people.
